The Android Phone Revolution
The development of the new Android operating system by Google has led to the production of a large number of android phones by many players in the telecommunications industry. Because of the fact that Google has made the Android platform available to all willing manufacturers, the number of cell phone that runs using this operating system, as well as tablets that do the same, has increased steadily over the years. In sharp contrast to the other major competitor in the smartphones market, there are a large number of new Android powered phones that are released on to the market each year. The iPhone, manufactured by Apple, was the Smartphone that previously held the top spot in the industry, prior to the introduction of the Android phone. However, the new technology has managed within a span of less than three years to displace the iPhone as the most popular Smartphone, with the largest market proportion.
There are a considerable number of reasons why the iPhone and other smartphones like the BlackBerry never really stood a chance against the Android mobile phones. The first and major reason is variety. While Apple is only able to release one new model of the iPhone every year, there is a considerable number of android phones that are brought to the market each year. This is so due to Google’s freeware policy regarding the use of Android technology that makes the technology available for use by any mobile phone manufacturer that wishes to use it. Because of the large number of new Android powered cellular phones in the market, customers are able to enjoy greater choices and so are more likely to buy these devices. In addition, the high competition among individual android mobile phones has resulted in some very affordable models. There are android powered phones that can be obtained for less than $100 in the United States. This is also in sharp contrast to their competitors who are only able to release a single new model each year and, as such, the model is usually relatively highly priced and out of the reach of many average income users.
Besides the above factors, there is also the obvious superiority in efficiency and connectivity that the android devices offer to their users. More than a third of all android phones currently on the market support a 4G connection. It is important to note here that the android operating system is the only operating system available right now that supports 4G connection for a cell phone.
