CBC News:Obesity: How do you maintain a healthy body weight?

Obesity could be socially contagious, say researchers who are trying to understand how it spreads among family and friends.

In this week's online issue of the American Journal of Public Health, U.S. researchers explore ideas on whether people hang around with others of similar body shapes because they think alike, or how family members exercise together or turn down dessert because it was expected of them.

Alex Brewis, a biological anthropologist at Arizona State University, says the findings suggest it's what people do together, rather than how they think like one another, that explains why friends tend to gain and lose weight together
